Toothbrush bracelets

Valentine's Day is approaching!. In my opinion, Love should be celebrated every single day of the year ;) but if you are thinking about giving a little something to your loved ones, why not trying these toothbrush bracelets?. You could do the shaping and your little ones the decorative part. They look really cool and it is an excellent gift idea ;)

What you'll need:
-Old toothbrush
-Tweezers or pliers
-Pot
-Tongs
-Large mug
-Oven gloves

How to make it:
-Remove all the bristles from the toothbrush with tweezers or pliers.
-Boil water.
-Keep water boiling, put toothbrush in water for five minutes.
-Remove toothbrush with tongs, bend to desired shape.
-If toothbrush doesn't bend enough, submerge again in water.
-Remove brush and bend as much as possible.
-Place bent toothbrush in bottom of mug to hold it's shape while it cools.
-Pour cold water in mug and remove your new bracelet.

Tips:
This craft requires fishing the hot toothbrushes out of boiling water and bending them while they are still hot. Be sure to use a simple toothbrush for this, it seems the fancier, and more high tech the toothbrush the stronger, and more difficult to bend. We had luck with the classic REACH toothbrushes.

It's a rocket thing

As my soon is very in the "rocket" mood lately, I thought it was a good idea to dig in the recycle bag and take out some empty bottles to make one. I love making toys using recycled material, as it is fun, is boost your child's creativity and if they break after a quite excessive play, it won't hurt your pocket ;)

For this project we used empty plastic bottles in different sizes, empty toilet paper rolls, loads of masking tape (or any strong tape you may have around), silver painting, stickers, glue, markers and a plastic bag for the fire (you can also use red and yellow cellophane if you like). Enjoy!

Jack-O lanterns carving

Ok, our Halloween bags are ready (see previous post), now it is time to make our very own Jack-O lantern!. These lanterns are very simple to make and totally fun, plus, your little one(s) will love to help ;). The good thing about making Jack-O lanterns with "real" pumpkins is that they will become 100% organic waste (go green!), plus, you can save the seeds and plant them with your children, or use them for crafts decoration.

October is here and Halloween is coming very soon! we made this lovely Halloween bags a couple of days ago, only using old cardboard, paper boxes, newspaper, straws, glue, painting and a lot of excitement!. My little one had loads of fun making it and he was very proud with the results. This is also a lovely way to encourage them to make things by themselves and to keep on re-using material, for a greener world ;)

Cardboard Bike unveiled

This is like the ultimate green transport idea ;)

Phil Bridge, a student at Sheffield University, created a unique cardboard bicycle which aims to reduce thefts and encourage people to go greener and use "bikes" instead of cars. About his prototype, Phil said: 'The lightweight quality of the cardboard, combined with its low cost, means it is possible to create a bargain-bike that is also less susceptible to thieves. At the moment low-cost bikes are usually very heavy, which can also put people off.'

The cardboard bicycle is is made almost entirely from recyclable material and uses interchangeable mechanical parts. It is also cheap (around £15 to be produced), can be used in most weathers, but has a life expectancy of about six months.

KNOW YOUR LABELS

Food labelling should be simple but it is not. Virtually every product on the supermarket shelf has its own unique set of colour codes or logos claiming to be healthy or free from one harmful thing or another. It can be a minefield working out which product is healthier to buy and labelling for animal welfare is no different. In fact, some labels you will find on meat products are positively misleading!

What to beware of

If you care about where your meat comes from beware of the Red Tractorlogo. The Red Tractor scheme, run by Assured Food Standards claims to promote good farming practices but in reality often offers little assurance to consumers beyond simple compliance with minimum legal requirements.

The Lion Mark is important for food safety, ensuring your eggs are safe to eat, but guarantees nothing about the conditions in which the eggs were laid.

What do these labels mean?

These food labels basically confirm compliance with minimum legal regulations
Almost all British produce will have these labels
The standards do nothing to prevent the serious welfare issues of confinement in cages, high stocking densities, fast-growing breeds and many mutilations
In fact some of the standards can be lower than DEFRA recommendations (which are not enforceable by law), e.g. high stocking density so chickens suffer from issues connected with overcrowding
One or two of the standards are higher than minimum legal regulations e.g. castration of pigs is not allowed

Beware clever marketing

Beware terms like "Farm Fresh." They are nothing more than a marketing ploy and mean nothing in terms of animal welfare.

What to look for

Organic labels

Organic is a land-based farming system using no chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Animals have outdoor access and other higher welfare e.g. later weaning in pigs. There are currently nine different organisations who can give organic certification.

The Soil Association Organic Standard provides the highest welfare levels in the UK e.g. smaller flock sizes for chickens and no live exporting of dairy calves.

Freedom Food

Freedom Food is the RSPCA's labelling and assurance scheme dedicated to improving welfare standards for farm animals. The scheme covers both indoor and outdoor rearing systems and ensures that greater space and bedding material are provided.

Store Standards

Other stores might have their own standards which can go above other standards e.g. Waitrose and M&S whose basic level meat and poultry generally have a higher standard of welfare.

Stores such as Whole Foods Market have their own labelling system with a good base level and very high welfare at best e.g. no mutilations and very extensive free-range (see their standards brochure).

Free-range

Animals have access to the outdoors for at least part of their life.There are EU regulations about what free-range means for laying hens and broilers (meat chickens) but there are no EU regulations for free-range pork and so pigs could be indoors for some of their lives.

Other labels

Eggs

If you are buying eggs look for organic, free-range, and if possible tree cover e.g. Sainsbury’s woodland eggs.

Chicken and turkey

If you are buying chicken meat look for organic, free-range, or if not these then good indoor chicken such as Freedom Food and higher welfare products e.g. Tesco Willow Farm Chicken.

Pork, ham, bacon

If you're buying pigmeat make sure the animal was born and reared outdoors. There are some good indoor systems for rearing pigs – look out for provision of bedding in the standards.

Beef and veal

If you're buying beef or veal buy British and especially British organic, look out for grass fed on the label.

Dairy produce

Look out for organic, preferably Soil Association certified, milk, yogurt, cheese and butter. Otherwise, look for own-label dairy produce from supermarkets who have also stopped calf-exports such as M&S and Tesco.

A Bento Box for healthier children.

A Bento Box is, essentially, a Japanese lunch box. They are normally filled with a portion of rice, meat or fish and vegetables. Nowadays, Bento Boxes for children are very popular, as they offer a good variety of healthy food which is displayed in a very creative and fun way.

Fruits, vegetables and healthy sandwiches may sound like a simple combination, but not in a Bento Box, as "fun" is the main ingredient (and children simply love them).

World Cup healthy snacks

Pop Corn

Popping your own popcorn is easier than you may think. By doing it yourself it will be fresh and you can control the amount of salt and sugar you put in.

Popcorn is full of energy, high in fibre and has lots of iron, vitamin B and plenty of protein in it aswell. Go easy though and don't eat a portion the size of a small suitcase.

Corn chips and dips

Like popcorn, corn chips have similar nutritional values because they are both corn. Obviously, they are processed and should be eaten in mo

deration. Tortilla chips are put through a process called, 'Nixtamalization'. This process increases their nutritional content and gives them that unique flavour.

Dip them in some hummus, which is a fantastic source of protein, B6 and fibre. Or try crushing up an avocado, which has lots of good fats in it with finely chopped tomatoes. Together with corn chips they make the perfect all round telly snack.

Dipped Food in Dark Chocolate

Now, I don't want any comments about me throwing chocolate into the mix. It is well documented that dark chocolate with 70% cocoa solids in moderation has many health benefits. Studies suggest that eating a little dark chocolate can help reduce blood pressure. PERFECT for an exciting game.

Melt some dark chocolate in a bowl on some hot water. Then dip in some strawberries and pineapple pieces. Pop them onto a tray with grease proof paper on it and put in the fridge at the start of the game. By half time you wont care what score it is.

Nuts

Nuts are rich in the right fats, protein, minerals and vitamins. Here's the catch, don't eat salted or dry roasted or nuts that are covered.

One last thing, if you are snacking watching the footie on telly, make sure your main meals reflect this and keep the portion sizes small.

Another lovely book

I first heard about this fantastic creature when my son came back from the nursery and said: "mummy, I saw the Gruffalo today" and he wouldn't stop talking about a mouse, a snake, a fox and an owl during the rest of the day. I decided to find out more about it and when I did, I totally understood his excitement.

The Gruffalo tells the story of a clever little mouse who meets a fox, an owl and a snake while walking through the woods and how he manages to escape from danger... I cannot tell you more, but I assure you that it is worth adding this little book to your child's collection. In general, I can only say that it is a great story, with beautiful illustrations and that I've become a big fan of it!.

If your child loves it, you can go to the Gruffalo's official website where you will find lots of fun games, activities, colouring pages and even the "Gruffalo Crumble's" recipe, how yummy is that? ;)

Protecting your child's skin from the Sun

Rachel, from Heart of Light, shares this wonderfully detailed and easy to do tutorial to make your own headbands. I tried it myself and used an old pink t-shirt for the flower(you can basically use whatever spare textile you may have at home). These lovely flowers can also be used as appliqué for garments, decoration for hats and little bags or whatever you can imagine!

Lullabies are great to calm and relax (they also say that music in general is very important in child's development). Now, if just like me you love Rock, imagine having your favourite songs transformed into beautiful instrumental lullabies... sounds cool doesn't it?.

Well, that is exactly what Rockabye Baby! is about: they trade guitars and drums for soothing mellotrons, vibraphones and bells to create the perfect melodies. On their website, you can choose from a good variety of bands (including Coldplay, Guns n' Roses, Metallica, The Beatles, Greenday, Aerosmith, etc) and even listen to a little demo when you click on one of them. I read an article about this fantastic book and decided to get it straight away.

Children will learn lots of things at school (that is for sure), but there are many other vital things which are essential to your child's future.

In The Bright Stuff, the author (leading child education expert C J Simister), offers you diverse ideas, games and fun activities that you can use to preserve, nurture and enhance your child's potential and also to help them to develop skills such as curiosity, independent thinking, perseverance, determination, individuality and willingness to weigh up risks and solve problems.

The games and activities are very easy to do at home (or pretty much everywhere) and you don't need to prepare anything in advance (that is a huge plus, time is precious for some of us!). The games in general are more suitable for children over 4 years old, however there are many others which you can try with younger children (my son is only 3 and I can't wait to try a few with him).

Is it worth getting it? a radical yes in my opinion as all the family will learn together and have fun at the same time ;)

I know that sometimes it is difficult to imagine which fruits and vegetables can be mixed and taste delicious when it comes to baby purées. When my first son was young and I was looking for a recipe book to get some fresh ideas, I came across "The complete baby and toddler meal planner" by Annabel Karmel (a Mum, and children nutritionist), which has lots of yummy ideas, very easy to cook and that your children will surely love! (mine still does). You can either get one of her books (which I highly recommend, at least the one I have is amazing) or surf on her website, where you will find delicious recipes and ideas for different ages. Enjoy!

Fortunately for us, when we want water, it is as simple as turning on a tap, and there it is, piped into our homes, clean and fresh and available whenever we need it. But that doesn’t mean that we should waste it; despite its apparent abundance - there is after all more water on the earth's surface than there is land - water is a valuable commodity that should not be wasted. Teaching our children to value, respect, and, above all, not waste water, is an important - and ecologically sound - lesson that should be taught from an early age!

Easy ways to save water

We should all be looking at ways to save water around the home and the simplest and probably the most obvious is to turn the tap off when we don’t need it! How many of us routinely leave the taps running when we clean our teeth? Or fill the bath right up to the top for a measly five minute soak?! Or let the kitchen sink over flow when we dash of to answer the phone or the front door? As fun as it is to use the garden hose for water fights in the hot weather, it is also extremely wasteful!

Easy ways for the family to save water

Shower instead of bathing!. Don’t run the dishwasher on a half load! Wait until you have enough dirty dishes and crockery for a full load.

Ditto the washing machine!. Fill a glass with water to rinse your teeth with instead of leaving the tap on!

Grab a big bowl to wash your fruits and veggies in rather than rinsing them under a running tap -Then try and count and identify any bugs and creepy crawlies you find in the water!

Don’t flush the loo more than you have too!. There are certain things that have to be flushed away, but stuff like paper hankies, cotton buds and cotton wool should be put in the bin!

Don’t wait for the tap to run cold for a drink. Instead keep a jug of drinking water chilling in the fridge!

Get a water butt in the garden to collect rainwater in. When it’s full, use it to water your plants and lawn or fill your pond! Go on a dripping tap finding mission! Leaks equal waste, so check all your taps for annoying little drips!

-70% of the world’s water use is agricultural, with a minuscule 8% used for domestic purposes!

-In the developing world, water-borne disease is responsible for 80% of illnesses and deaths.

-The recommended amount of daily water per person for basic domestic usage is 5 litres for drinking, 20 litres for sanitation and 15 litres for bathing!

-We can go without food for around a month - but we’d only survive around week without water!
